The petition is the document that actually starts the process of your divorce or family law matter. In Florida, it is called a petition for dissolution of marriage in a divorce or in a family law matter it would be, for example, a petition to determine paternity. We like to use the legal terms because it makes it a little bit easier on the parties. Divorce is one of those terms that people just don’t like to hear so we call it a petition for dissolution of marriage.
